Conference

The student conference is a one week long extra curricular event for university students and academics to engage into an interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange on challenges to reconstruction and reconciliation in post war Iraq by collaboratively reviewing scientific findings and developing ideas on how young people, academia and the wider society in Ninevah and Iraq can contribute to reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The conference will take place from 12-16. February 2023 on Mosul University campus. The conference is the biggest academic student event in the history of the University and the second international conference event of Mosul University after its return to the Mosul campus. The organizers consider the conference of major relevance as it will bring back life to the campus and after the reopening of the recently reconstructed student hall, library and faculty buildings and a phase of pandemic caused distance learning. As part of the conference about 800 students from all academic disciplines will work in about 40 interdisciplinary workshops that were carefully prepared by professors and lecturers from Iraq, Germany, Austria and Poland. Results of the workshops will be exhibited and discussed with regard to possible applications and policy considerations with the University presidency, professionals and policy makers in a big final public conference event. The conference concept has been carefully developed by a team of professors and successfully implemented in six similar events between 2018 and 2021. The program comprises three major elements:

– a conference opening (12.02.2023) with introduction to the conference and a keynote

– about 40 parallel four-day workshops (13.02.2023-16.02.2023) and

a conference closing (16.02.2023)

Conference theme 2023

Questions of maintaining or improving quality of life for all people can be considered a key to development of societies and a starting point for an extensive interdisciplinary scientific debate. In our conference we refer to the European Commission Model of life quality which is used to conceptualize and evaluate quality of life according to nine dimensions. These dimensions range from very general themes like “overall experience in life” to more subject specific such as “education”.

This conceptualization of life quality is guiding our conference is guiding the setup of the 7th RESI student conference 2023. Because of this high global and local relevance, we decided to set quality of life with all related questions, concepts and discourses, as the umbrella theme for the 2023 student conference. The key questions we wish to address and discuss with all participants are:

• How can quality of life scientifically be conceptualized and measured in different academic fields and contexts?

• What is the meaning of quality of life in reconstruction and reconciliation challenges in Mosul and the region?

• What role can Mosul University and its students play in the process of the development of life quality in the region?
